LUBBOCK – Texas Tech head coach Grant McCasland has officially announced the signing of transfer guard Donovan Atwell who will join the Red Raider program for the 2025-26 season after three years at UNC Greensboro.
A 6-foot-5 sharpshooter from Huntersville, North Carolina, Atwell will have one season of eligibility remaining to compete for Texas Tech during the 2025-26 season. He has played in 95 career games, posting 907 points, 215 made 3-ponters (39.4 percent), 225 rebounds, 56 assists and 53 steals during his career. Atwell has been a starter for the Spartans over the past two seasons and is coming off a junior season where he made 96 3-pointers (39.8 percent) and averaged 13.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.00 3-pointers made per game.Â
Atwell scored a season-high 28 points against Chattanooga in a game where he was 6-for-7 from 3-point range and also made 4-of-4 at the free-throw line. He scored in double figures 22 times during the season where he started all 32 games. He also had four games with 20-plus points, scoring 27 at North Florida with four 3-pointers and going for 21 against Virginia-Lynchburg with five 3-pointers. Atwell finished the season 96-for-241 (39.8 percent) from 3-point range and made four or more 3-pointers in 15 games. His 3.00 3-pointers per game ranked third in the conference and was the 34th most nationally while his 96 makes from deep ranked 43rd throughout college basketball.
Throughout his first three seasons, Atwell is 215-for-545 (39.4 percent) on 3-pointers and has averaged 9.5 points per game. He has averaged in double figures the past two seasons, including going for 11.4 points per game as a junior in the 2023-24 season where he was 93-for-220 (42.3 percent) on 3-point attempts. Atwell started 33 games as a sophomore after playing in a reserve role as a freshman, finishing his first collegiate season with 30 games played off the bench and averaging 3.5 points per game and going 26-for-84 from deep.
Atwell is the third player to sign with Texas Tech this offseason following its run to the 2025 NCAA Tournament Elite 8. He follows Tyeree Bryan who signed with the Red Raiders on April 9 after playing the previous two seasons at Santa Clara where he averaged 10.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.1 steals and 2.06 3-pointers made per game last season and LeJuan Watts who signed on April 16. Watts is a junior who played last season at Washington State, averaging 13.7 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game.
The Red Raiders finished last season with a 28-9 overall record, including being second in the Big 12 standings with a 15-5 conference record. Tech matched the program record with a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the program's third Elite 8. The Red Raiders are 51-20 over the past two seasons under McCasland with back-to-back trips to the national tournament.
