Peyton Dunn eclipses 2,000 assists as Red Raiders fall
ATHENS, Georgia – The Red Raiders dropped their match against Georgia on Thursday night 3-1 but battled hard throughout. Peyton Dunn eclipsed 2,000 career assists as she posted a season-high 46 assists. Reagan Engler again posted a double-double and set a new career-high with 19 kills.
Tech had a cast of players contribute on the offensive side, highlighted by Engler's 19 kills. Addie Kanouff followed up her career performance with an 11-kill game as freshman Shelby Ignash broke out in her first collegiate action going for five kills while hitting .571.
Aliyah McDonald finished the match with six kills and a team-high three blocks while freshmen Kalli Jioshvili Ravva and Kenna McKenzie added five kills each. Dunn tallied four kills to go along with her assists as Tatum Johnson, Ashlyn Bellamy and Jasmine Martin combined for the final four Red Raider kills.
Three Red Raiders touched double-digits for digs including Engler with 13, Bellamy with 10 and Sierra Grizzle with a team-high 16. Dunn added nine digs while Emily Contreras added four digs and a pair of aces.
How it happened:
The first set featured about a 20-minute delay due to water leakage on the court with it being tied 22-22. Tech (3-2) had rallied back from a 7-3 deficit to take a 19-14 lead before the Bulldogs (4-0) answered back with a big rally of their own going on an 8-3 run before the delay settled the momentum. Neither team could make a run, but Georgia was able to get the last two points of the set and take the win 28-26.
The second set was a battle where neither team could muster a large run before Georgia built on a 17-16 lead with an 8-1 run to close it out and take a 25-17 win. The Bulldogs hit .433 and used four aces to take control of the set late.
Tech bounced back with a third set victory which they led the whole time. Engler, McDonald, McKenzie and Kanouff combined for 15 of the Red Raiders 16 kills as Tech capitalized on five service errors from Georgia to take a 25-22 set win and put pressure on the host team.
The Red Raiders took an early 5-2 lead in set four before Georgia came back to tie it at 10-10. They then mustered a 6-2 run thanks to a pair of aces. The Bulldogs built on their lead and went up 21-16 to force a Texas Tech timeout but were not slowed down as they closed out the set to take a 3-1 win.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will finish their trip to Athens with an 11 a.m. CT match against Alabama State tomorrow.
