LUBBOCK – No. 13 Texas Tech took its first home loss of the season after leading 59-50 with six minutes to play but seeing No. 11 Kansas go on a 14-2 run to end the game and win 64-61 over the Red Raiders on Monday at United Supermarkets Arena. Tech (16-6, 6-3 Big 12) fell to 11-1 on its home court in a game with 10 lead changes and six ties while the Jayhawks (17-5, 7-2 Big 12) extended a six-game winning streak.
"What a competitive Big 12 game," Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland said. "I loved our competitiveness and fight. I told them that. This game is about finding ways to win and we didn't do that. Kansas did down the stretch. We didn't execute well enough and I thought Kansas was tremendous late with great actions and had guys step up offensively and defensively. We don't get time to think about anything other than we have to go beat West Virginia on Sunday. The Big 12 is about being resilient and getting better. We'll get better because of this. Our guys are tough and care a lot about this team."
Tech, which has dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season, returns to action against West Virginia at 12 p.m. (CST) on Sunday at Hope Coliseum in Morgantown, West Virginia before hosting Colorado on Wednesday, Feb. 11 at United Supermarkets Arena.
LeJuan Watts led the Red Raiders with 19 points and 12 rebounds to record his third double-double of the season while JT Toppin finished with 10 points and six rebounds. Tech had four players score in double figures with Donovan Atwell going for 12 points after making four 3-pointers and Jaylen Petty adding 11 points with three 3s. Watts also added five assists and two steals while Atwell matched a season-high with seven rebounds. Tyeree Bryan added six points and three rebounds while Jazz Henderson made his first appearance since playing one minute in the win over Oklahoma State on January 3 and made the first 3-pointer of his career. Henderson finished with three points in nearly eight minutes of playing time.
