Hays’ gem pushes Tech to run-rule win over UNM

The freshman tossed five scoreless to earn his first career win
LUBBOCK, Texas – Freshman Adam Hayes tossed five stellar innings and three Red Raider relievers tossed three perfect innings to power Texas Tech to a 12-2 run-rule (8 inn.) win over New Mexico Tuesday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
In his first career home start, Hayes retired the first eight batters he faced in succession on Tuesday before running into the first and only jam of his afternoon in the third.
With the Texas Tech (16-8) bats providing plenty of run support for the neophyte righty, Hayes stranded runners on the corners with a 2-2 strike out in third.
Amongst his five-inning outing, Hays scattered just four hits, with two of the four hits being of the infield variety.
At the plate, all nine Red Raider hitters scored a run as the Red Raiders bookended a sixth run first inning with a four run eighth to defeat New Mexico (15-9) in Lubbock for the first time since 2023. UNM took the 2024 matchup in Lubbock before the 2025 matchup was canceled.
In the first inning Tech used five-straight two-out singles and two-run Lobo throwing error to race out to a 6-0 lead.
And while Hayes was the story on Tuesday afternoon, the Red Raiders got three perfect innings from relievers Logan Addison, Jonny Lowe and Jacob Rogers to send the game to the eighth with the Red Raiders on top 8-2.
Addison, who entered with runners on second and third and nobody out and Tech up 8-1, needed just 11 pitches (all strikes) to limit the UNM damage to just a sac-fly. He struck out two batters, one swinging and one looking in a big bounce back effort.
In the eighth, the Red Raiders loaded the bases with nobody out on a hit-by-pitch and a pair of bunt hits.
Tech ultimately plated the requisite four runs needed to win in run-rule fashion for the sixth time this season in the first 16 home games.
In the win, the Red Raiders improve to an impressive 13-3 at home, as Tech has already eclipsed last year's 12-win performance at Rip Griffin Park. The Red Raiders have also already surpassed last season's 25-game home run total, as with the 12-spot today the Red Raiders have now scored 196 times in the first 16 home games (12.3 runs per game).
Tech scored only 189 times at home last season.
With the two crooked numbers in the first and eighth, the Red Raiders also recorded their 36th and 37th three-plus run innings of the season. The Red Raiders had just 42, innings with three or more runs a season ago, and are now an impressive 16-3 in the 19 games they have a crooked number.
