As a team, the Red Raiders were a perfect 10-for-10 on stolen bases today led by Mihyia Davis who had three across both games. Davis also made a highlight-reel catch against the center field wall and recorded the first multi-homer game of her career as she launched two long balls in game one against Houston.
The Red Raiders also had five sacrifice flies and drew nine free passes while striking out just three times. On the other of the ball, Tech pitchers recorded 13 strikeouts while walking just one batter through 10.0 innings.
How it Happened:
GAME 1 – Tech – 10, Houston – 0 (5):
It was all Texas Tech all day. The Red Raiders scored two runs in the first inning off home run from Terry to bring home Davis who drew a leadoff walk. Canady struck out three of the four batters she faced and allowed a runner after a hit by pitch which set the tone for her no-hit performance.
Terry added another Red Raider run on a single to left field to put Tech up 3-0 entering the third inning. Desirae Spearman drove home Lagi Quiroga on a sacrifice fly and Allred drove in Lis before Davis got the first of two home runs on the day to make it 7-0.
Williams took the first pitch she saw over the fence to leadoff the fourth inning and put the game in run-rule territory. Davis's second homer in the top of the fifth would make it 10-0 and a strong play at third base from Taylor Pannell secured Canady's no-hitter.
GAME 2 – Tech – 11, Houston – 1 (5):
The Red Raiders kept their foot on the gas in game two as they scored three runs in the first inning on a single from Terry and a two-run double from Lis. Terry struck out the lead off batter for the Cougars before allowing back-to-back singles, but worked out of the jam nicely and closed the inning on a strikeout.
Tech peppered the Houston defense and then caused havoc on the base paths, thanks to four wild pitches, to add five more runs in the second. Toney, Terry and Williams all picked up RBI on hits. Williams scored on a wild pitch and Quiroga drove in the final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly. Back-to-back sacrifice flies from Terry and Williams in the fourth inning put Tech up 10-0.
Houston recorded its lone run of the day in the fourth inning thanks to an error that allowed the lead off batter to get to third base. Davis made an excellent catch in the outfield with the runner on third to erase an extra base hit, but the unearned run came into score.
Terry added one more Red Raider run on another sacrifice fly before striking out two batters in the final frame to secure the win.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will close out its series against Houston at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
