Tech wins back-and-forth game thanks to big 7th inning
Four Red Raiders threw pitches in the game and despite throwing just 0.2 innings, Kaitlyn Terry was the pitcher of record, improving to 11-0 on the season. Samantha Lincoln got the start and went a total of 3.0 innings. NiJaree Canady came in in relief with two outs in the third inning and finished with four strikeouts through 2.1 innings of work and allowed just one run which was unearned. Chloe Riassetto threw the final inning of the game to secure Tech's 25th win of the season.
Lagi Quiroga led Tech's offense today as she hit two home runs, both when the game was tied, and finished the game with three RBI. Toney also recorded three RBI thanks to her home run and was 2-for-3 at the plate and improved to 11-for-11 on stolen bases. Taylor Pannell, Mia Williams and Kaitlyn Terry also recorded multiple hits, Pannell leading the group with three. Williams and Pannell both picked up two RBI as Williams hit her 10th home run of the season.
How it Happened:
The game had the makings of being a tough one from the start. Tech loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning and were not able to capitalize as the Cougars Neveah Brown got out of the jam unscathed. Houston then took the lead on the second pitch they saw as Maddie Hartley hit her 11th home run of the season.
Tech bounced back after Lauren Allred and Toney singled before Mihyia Davis grounded out to short but hit the ball deep enough to score Allred and tie the game 1-1. Lincoln held the Cougars in check with a 1-2-3 inning and Tech then took the lead on a ground out from Jackie Lis that scored Williams.
Houston tied the game back up 2-2 after an error allowed a run score from second on fielder's choice. Quiroga rallied the offense with a two-run homer that scored Pannell and after putting up a zero, Tech added two more runs on a two-run homer from Williams to make the game 6-2.
Heading into the bottom of the sixth with a four-run lead, Tech had all the momentum, but a young Houston team was not deterred. The Cougars loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a single and tied the game 6-6 thanks to a four-run inning highlighted by a Texas-league double that scored two runs.
Quiroga again proved a spark for the offense hitting a high fly ball over the left field fence to put Tech up 7-6 to start the final inning. The Red Raiders added five more runs on Toney's big fly and a two-run double from Pannell which put Tech up 12-6 and gave them a nice cushion heading into the final frame. Houston, again, would not go quietly as they loaded the bases with two outs but Riassetto was able to get the last out on a ground out to third to avoid anymore chaos.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will play a mid-week game against Tarleton State on Tuesday before hosting Arizona this coming weekend.
