Tech rolls to run-rule win, series sweep of Penn State

The Red Raiders outscored PSU 50-17 in the three-game sweep
LUBBOCK, Texas – Up by just a run heading to the bottom of the sixth, Texas Tech Baseball erupted for four in the sixth and five in the seventh to down Penn State 14-4, in run-rule fashion to clinch a Sunday sweep of the weekend series.
Moving to 9-1 this season at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park, Texas Tech (10-4) once again scored early, using a two-run first inning double from Logan Hughes and a three-run second inning to take a 5-0 lead.
The quick 5-0 burst marked the third-straight day the Red Raiders chased the Penn State (4-8) starter before the end of the second inning.
After PSU scored two in the third and singular runs in the fourth and the fifth to pull to within 5-4, the Red Raiders used a two-RBI single from Freshman Linkin Garcia and an RBI double from
Caden Ferraro off the right-field wall to pull in front 8-4.
One batter later with Hughes on third base, the Red Raiders took a 9-4 lead on an RBI grounder from Matt Quintanar.
After Logan Bevis used a 4-6-3 two-ball to escape first and second with nobody out, the Red Raiders made just one out in the bottom of the seventh, using a two-run triple from Connor Shouse, another RBI knock from Ferraro and a walk-off two-run single from Davis Rivers to record their sixth run-rule win of the season.
In the win, the Red Raiders turned to Jonny Lowe who after tossing two scoreless innings with three strikeouts, allowed a two-run RBI single to Michael Anderson that started PSUs three-straight run scoring inning streak. Lowe struck out three in his first start of th season.
Out of the bullpen, the Red Raiders got two key outs from reliever Heeryun Han for the second-straight day and four outs from sophomore Will Jordan who earned the victory on Sunday.
Jordan has now allowed just one run in his six innings pitched this season.
At the plate, the Red Raiders got a 4-for-5 day from Shouse and a perfect 3-for-3 day from Ferraro. The right fielder drove in two and walked twice, reaching base in all five of his plate appearances.
Ferraro is now 13 for his last 18 at the plate and has walked nine times in his last seven games.
On the weekend, the Blinn College transfer, went 7-for-9 with a home run, five RBIs and six runs scored.
He walked three times and was also hit by a pitch, recording a split of .778/.846/2.290.
Ferraro was one of six Red Raiders that hit better than .425 on the weekend, as the group also included Shouse who went 7-for-12 with seven RBIs and Hughes who went 4-for-9 with six
walks, a double and six RBIs.
The Red Raiders also got eight RBIs and six runs scored from Garcia on the weekend to bring the freshman's total RBI count to a team-best 28.
Tech outscored Penn State 50-17, marking the 11th-straight game the Red Raiders have tallied at least eight runs or more in a game. The Red Raiders are 10-1 in those 11 contests.
Through the season's first 14 games, the Red Raiders have now scored 170 total runs (12.1 per game) and are hitting .382 as a team.
Every Red Raider (10 total players) with at least 25 at-bats on the season are hitting over .340 highlighted by Ferraro's team-leading .471 average.Â
In total, three Red Raiders (Garcia, Hughes and Shouse) have driven in 20+ runs through the season's first 14 games and seven Red Raiders have scored at least 15 runs.

The Red Raiders will welcome a midweek ranked foe this Tuesday and Wednesday, when the Roadrunners of UTSA come to town for a two-game series. First pitch for both games is set for 6:30 p.m.
