BYU defeats Texas Tech Baseball 4-1

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- BYU handed the Texas Tech baseball team its third loss on the season with a 4-1 decision Thursday at Phoenix' Municipal Stadium. The game was Texas Tech's first in the Oakland As Spring Training Invitational. The loss drops Texas Tech to 8-3 on the season while BYU improves to 7-2 overall.
BYU grabbed a quick 3-0 lead after its first two offensive innings. The Cougars scored one run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Pond. BYU scored two more in the second inning off a two-RBI single by Troy McNaughton. The Cougars scored an insurance run in the fifth inning on an RBI single by David Decker.
Texas Tech's Jesse Cornejo (2-1) pitched 7.0 innings and allowed nine hits and four runs (four earned). He struck out a career-high 11 Cougar batters. BYU's Jeremy Guthrie (2-0) earned the victory after limiting Tech to six hits and one run in a complete game.
Texas Tech scored one run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Ryan Ruiz walked and advanced to third on a Keith Ginter single and error by the BYU leftfielder. He scored on a wild pitch.
