LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech womens soccer team begins preparations for its 1998 season tomorrow as players report for preseason workouts.
The 17 returnees and 11 newcomers take care of team business on Friday afternoon before undertaking their first workout on Saturday at 4:30 p.m on the football practice field. The team will normally practice at 9 a.m. and again at 4 p.m. for the next several days. Depending on field conditions, workouts will be held at the soccer practice field located at the intersection of Flint and Main on the Texas Tech campus.
"This is the first year where we have quite a few options in the midfield, defense and forward positions," says Felix Oskam, who enters his second season as head coach. "The last couple of seasons, the depth at each position was lacking. Its a luxury to have so many quality players. I look to find a few of them who can step up and make an immediate impact on our program."
Last season, the young Red Raiders posted a 7-11 mark which included five overtime contests. Highlighting the Red Raider squad is junior forward Kristy Frantz, who scored a team-high 33 points (14 goals, five assists) in 1997. A native of Alexandria, Va., Frantz was selected to the NSCAA All-Central Region third team.
Techs 1998 opponent non-conference schedule features two NSCAA top-20 teams (#20 SMU, #18 Maryland). The campaign opens on Tuesday, Sept. 1 as the Red Raiders host the SMU Lady Mustangs at 4 p.m. As a warm-up to the season, Tech will play two scrimmages - the first being on Saturday, Aug. 22 vs. West Texas A&M at 4 p.m. in Canyon. Techs final scrimmage is to be held on Friday, Aug. 28 against Angelo State slated for a 4 p.m. start at R.P. Fuller Stadium.
