LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Kliff Kingsbury threw four touchdown passes to Derek Dorris as Texas Tech snapped a two-game losing streak with a 45-39 victory over Kansas on Saturday.
Kansas quarterback Dylen Smith ran for three touchdowns, including a 1-yard run that closed the gap to six points with 2:02 left. Mark Washington recovered an onside kick at the Kansas 46, but Carl Nesmith blocked Chris Burkholz's 44-yard field-goal attempt and Algie Atkinson returned it to the Kansas 40.
Smith, who threw for a career-high 327 yards, completed two passes to Termaine Fulton to give the Jayhawks (4-4, 2-3 Big 12) a first down at the Red Raiders' 22 with four seconds left. But his pass for Harrison Hill, covered tightly by Antwan Alexander, went just high in the corner of the end zone.
The four touchdown catches were a career high for Dorris. He caught a 5-yarder from Kingsbury in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead, then had TD catches of 2 and 11 yards in the second quarter as the Red Raiders (6-3, 2-3) built a 28-14 lead.
Kingsbury added a 12-yard scoring pass to Dorris for a 42-25 lead early in the fourth quarter. Kingsbury finished with 394 yards for Texas Tech, which was coming off losses to No. 1 Nebraska and No. 10 Kansas State, and Wes Welker ran 42 yards for one score and returned a punt 66 yards for another for the Red Raiders.
David Winbush carried 20 times for a season-high 120 yards for the Jayhawks, who missed a chance to win three straight conference games for the first time since 1995.
Smith's second TD, a 6-yard run, capped a 97-yard drive after a goal-line stand and cut Texas Tech's lead to 42-32 with 6:59 left. The Red Raiders answered with Birkholz's 23-yard field goal for a 45-32 lead.
Smith, who also ran 1 yard for a TD in the third quarter to cut Texas Tech's lead to 35-25 , threw a 7-yard pass to Jason Gulley for a 7-all tie late in the first. But Texas Tech answered with Kingsbury's 2-yard TD pass to Dorris and Welker's punt return for a 21-7 lead.
Kansas got a 1-play scoring drive later in the second on Smith's 56-yard bomb to Fulton, but Kingsbury threw his third TD pass of the half to Dorris on Texas Tech's next possession.
Welker's 42-yard touchdown run gave the Red Raiders a 35-14 lead early in the third quarter. Kansas' Joe Garcia, wide left from 32 yards on the Jayhawks' first drive, hit from the same distance midway through the third to make it 35-17.
The game was marred by six 15-yard face mask penalties, four on Texas Tech and two against the Jayhawks.
