LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech head women's basketball coach Marsha Sharp received the Harley Redin Alumni Coach's Award from Wayland Baptist University last Saturday.
The Harley Redin Alumni Coach's Award was established in honor of the former Wayland basketball coach who coached a total of 27 years at Wayland, compiling a school record of 608 wins and 165 losses. The award was created not only as a tribute to Redin and the legacy he has provided Wayland, but also to recognize and honor alumni who have established themselves as outstanding coaches, either at the college or public/private school level.
Sharp, who was the second recipient of the annual award, is a 1974 graduate from Wayland Baptist where she played two years for the Flying Queens before starting her coaching career. She directed the freshman team during her junior and senior years. She also served as a graduate assistant coach during the 1974-75 season.
Sharp in currently in her 20th year as head coach of the Lady Raiders, establishing a career record of 459-142. In her time at Texas Tech, Sharp has captured eight regular-season conference titles and five conference tournament titles, while winning the 1993 NCAA National Championship. She was also named the National Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1994. Sharp's teams have also made the NCAA Tournament 14 times, including 12 straight, and her Lady Raiders have a phenomenal 99 percent graduation rate.
