LUBBOCK, Texas - Demetrice Sims scored 26 points - including two 3-pointers in the last five minutes - to help Sam Houston State beat Texas Tech 69-65 Saturday night.
Donald Cole added 15 and Felton Freeman scored 13 for the Bearkats of the Southland Conference.
Sam Houston (2-1 ) went on a 14-3 run to take a 57-55 lead with just more than 5 minutes remaining in the game. Tech had held a 16-point lead at the half.
When Texas Tech (3-1) finally scored a basket and a free throw to go ahead 58-57, Sims hit a 3-pointer to put the Bearkats up 60-58 with about 5 minutes remaining. Andre Emmett sank one of two free throws to pull Tech within 1, but then Sims hit another 3-pointer shot to give Sam Houston a 63-59 lead.
The Bearkats were 6-of-6 from the free throw line in the last 3 minutes.
Emmett scored 18 to lead the Red Raiders. Andy Ellis and Kasib Powell each added 17.
The loss was the first for Bob Knight since his return to coaching this year.
Knight sprang from the bench in the first half when he wanted an intentional foul called. He didn't press the issue.
Tech built a 42-26 lead at the half after going on a 26-10 run. The Bearkats committed seven turnovers to help the Red Raiders build the lead.
Sam Houston shot 14 3-pointers in the half, making only four of them. The long shots translated into more offensive rebounds for the Bearkats, but they failed to take advantage of those second chances.
