Tech Drops One Run Decision To Oregon State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Texas Tech put the game on cruise control a little to early as the Oregon State Beavers rallied from a 4-0 deficit to win 5-4 on Friday afternoon in the San Diego Baseball Classic at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
Texas Tech (7-5) took the lead in the top of the first inning on a two-run home run by Kerry Hodges who pulled the trigger for the third time this season. Junior shortstop Gera Alvarez popped Tech's second two-run home run of the game in the top of the fifth inning to complete the scoring for the Red Raiders.
Oregon State finally got on the board in the sixth inning scoring two runs to pull within two. The Beavers added three more runs in the eighth to take the lead.
Gera Alvarez started off Tech's half of the eighth with a double to leftfield to put a Red Raider in scoring position to tie the game. Catcher Anthony Arnerich grounded out on the next at bat to give Tech one out in the inning. Alvarez was caught stealing third base and Kerry Hodges flew out to left field to end the inning.
Beaver pitcher Scott Nicholson (1-0) sat down three consecutive Tech batters in the top of the ninth to earn his first win of the season and the Beavers first win ever against Texas Tech. Senior pitcher Blake McGinley took the loss for Texas Tech and fell to 1-1 on the year.
The Red Raiders will play San Diego State on Saturday evening at 8 p.m. (CT).
