OKLAHOMA vs. TEXAS TECH
SATURDAY, DEC. 12, 2002
LLOYD NOBLE CENTER - NORMAN, OKLA.
Texas Tech Head Coach Bobby Knight
On Texas Tech:
"We really kind of sealed our fate right away. One of the things we can't do is turn the ball over. At the first timeout I told the guys that we had six possessions and turned the ball over without ever getting a shot."
On Oklahoma:
"We just got exploited in every way we could and got beat by a better basketball team today. Oklahoma is a really good team across the board. Give me a thing that you do, say rebound. They can rebound. Quick, they're very quick. Play defense, they played really good defense. Shoot the ball, they shot the ball extremely well today. They didn't just shoot the ball well today, they shoot good all the time. They present problems for you on the defensive end and they get after you on their offensive end."
On the Sooner coaching staff:
"They've done a very good job putting the team together. It's a very, very well coached team and a very tough team to play against."
On the upcoming week:
"We just need to figure out how to bounce back and come back and play. Does a river without a bridge slow down your trip?"
Texas Tech center Andy Ellis
On the loss:
"Anytime you play like that it's going to set you back."
On OU's play:
"It seemed like there for a second we played like the team we are but for the most part OU just dominated the game. They did anything they wanted against us and we just didn't come out and play."
On bouncing back:
"We just need to learn from the loss and put it behind us. We have to work out tomorrow and get ready to beat Texas at home (on Monday)."
Oklahoma Quotes
Oklahoma Head Coach Kelvin Sampson
On today's game:
"Coach Knight has done an unbelievable job with that team. They really got out attention prior to this game. We really prepared for their motion offense and we have two good practices on Thursday and Friday. I thought our kids did a great job of rotating, and our defense and rebounding were terrific. To come back after an emotional win at Connecticut, it was good to see. That will help prepare us for the upcoming road games."
On OU's defense and foul trouble:
"Jabahri (Brown), Aaron (McGhee) and Daryan (Selvy) did a great job of switching on defense and this was the first game we had to deal with foul trouble. A few of our kids really stepped up. Jabahri blocked several shots and has several of those were called as fouls. He will have to watch those kind of fouls in the future, but you have to remember that he's just a sophomore and his game will improve. I think the road games will be a good experience for him."
On junior guard Hollis Price:
"Hollis had one of those days where he could hit a shot anywhere on the floor it seemed. But that had a lot to do with our fans because he was feeding off the energy of our crowd."
Oklahoma Junior Hollis Price
On his hot shooting in today's game: "You have to give a lot of credit to the guys getting me the ball. We were running our offense just like the coaches teach us and I just tried to find the open spot. Those guys got me the ball in good spots and the shots just went in. Coach Sampson always tells me I need to get more selfish, well in today's game, I think I got more selfish."
On combating Texas Tech's second-half run:
"Coach Sampson made some quick substitutions when they cut our lead to 16. Our intensity level went back up once we got the right guys back in there. We knew this wasn't Bobby Knight against Oklahoma, it was Texas Tech versus Oklahoma. We treated it as a normal game, just like any other and it showed."
On areas of improvement for the Sooners:
"We still need to work on our transition defense. That's something we focus on quite a bit in practice, but we didn't do a good job of that today. We did real well in that area against Connecticut, we just didn't carry that over today."
Oklahoma Junior Ebi Ere
On his performance today: "I don't get to grade my performance, that's the job of the coaches. I think I played well though, I was making some shots and things felt good. I was really feeling it in the first half."
On being an all-around player:
"Coach teaches us to penetrate and look for the open shot. If it's not there, there has to be someone open, so I try my best to look for open teammates. I want to do all the little things that will help this team. I do look to score first, but sometimes, when one of my teammates is open, I have to get it to them."
