LUBBOCK, Texas - Both the Texas Tech track and field teams will begin spring workouts at 4 p.m. this afternoon in the Athletic Training Center, with high hopes for the 2002 indoor and outdoor seasons.
The women's team is very young and returns only three seniors, but with track and field coach Wes Kittley's second recruiting class about to run for the first time he is excited about the possibilities. Returning from last years women's team are senior Melonie Barrow (Bronx, N.Y./George Washington) and sophomore Tiffany Green (Hamlin, Texas/Hamlin) who will anchor the sprint team.
Just like the women the men's team is very young, but well rounded at the same time. Kittley feels that he could have several athletes earn a trip to the national meet. Junior Jason Young (Dallas, Texas/W.W. Samuel), sprinter Reggie Hill (Atlanta, Texas/Abilene Christian) and senior-sprinter Julieon Raeburn will be looked upon to be leaders despite having redshirted last season. Headlining this year's team is a recruiting class that was ranked fourth in the nation by Track and Field News last month track.
Both teams are young but Kittley can't help but be excited about the potential of his teams heading into the indoor and outdoor seasons. "This season is going to be the turning point for the whole track program," stated Kittley. Both teams will sprint into the new season on Jan. 18-19 in the ATC at the Texas Tech Open.
