LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Andre Emmett scored 23 points and pulled down nine rebounds as Texas Tech defeated Kansas State 74-49 Sunday in each team's Big 12 opener.
Tech (12-1) went on an 11-0 run midway through the second half, holding the Wildcats (6-6) scoreless for about five minutes.
The win was the Red Raiders ninth straight and the least amount of points Tech has allowed this season.
Tech won by scoring from the perimeter to bypass Kansas State's zone defense. Tech's defense produced 15 steals and the offense got 26 baskets on 22 assists, a statistic that Knight uses to judge his team's efficiency.
Nick Valdez scored 13 points and Andy Ellis added 12 for Tech.
Phineas Atchison scored 12 points and Pervis Pasco added eight for the Wildcats.
Tech led 33-26 at halftime. After a slow and sloppy start for each team, the Red Raiders went on a 12-2 run in the closing minutes of the half. During the spurt, Marcus Shropshire went 3-for-3 on 3-pointers, scoring one point less than he's scored all season in less than three minutes.
After a poor shooting start that saw their percentage from the field dip to 17 percent, Tech went 7-for-13 in the last 7:51 of the half. Neither team shot well from the floor throughout the game: Tech shot 38 percent and Kansas State hit 39 percent.
The Wildcats were without their leading scorer and point guard Larry Reid who is out with a leg injury.
