DALLAS, Texas - Texas Tech junior sprinter Julieon Raeburn and Kansas State multi-event senior standout Austra Skujyte earned Big 12 Outdoor Male and Female Athlete of the Week honors for the week of March 18-24, the league office announced Monday.
Raeburn turned in a pair of first place finishes in the 200-meter dash and as a member of the Red Raiders' 4x100-meter relay, while also placing third in the 100-meter dash March 23 at the University of Texas' Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas. In the 200-meter dash, Raeburn posted a time of 20.97 seconds, and ran the second leg on the 4x100 relay team that raced to an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 40.10 seconds for the title. The Trinidad native recorded a time of 10.34 seconds in the 100 meters for his third-place finish. Overall, the Texas Tech men finished the meet in third place behind Big 12 foes Texas and Texas A&M and ahead of Houston and Texas-San Antonio.
Skujyte picked up right where she left off during the indoor season in the early outdoor campaign, after winning three events en route to automatically qualifying in the shot put and provisionally qualifying in both the discus and javelin competitions March 23 at the Jim Click Shootout hosted by the University of Arizona. A Birzai, Lithuania, native, Skujyte was named the Big 12 Indoor Female Performer of the Year and also holds the indoor collegiate record in the pentathlon. This past weekend Skujyte recorded a 55 feet, 10.5 inch throw in the shot put, 168-4 in the discus and 167-5 in the javelin. The shot put mark ranks second on K-State's all-time list. Skujyte's performances guided the Wildcat women to a second place finish at the four-team meet. Arizona won the meet, with Boise State and Air Force trailing KSU in third and fourth places, respectively.
TTU will compete next when it sends split squads to the Stanford Invitational Thursday, while hosting the Texas Tech Invitational in Lubbock. The Wildcats return to action Saturday when they will send student-athletes to the Stanford Distance Carnival and to the UTEP Invitational in El Paso, Texas.
