AUSTIN, Texas - Early results are in from the 75th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on the campus of the University of Texas and three of Tech's relays have advanced into the finals.
The women's 4x100-meter relay posted a heat time of 44.75 seconds to provisionally qualify for the NCAA national meet. The team of Rachelle Evans, Tiffany Green, Ashley Mitchell and Monique Wright-Cruse turned in the second best time in their heat and the sixth fastest of the day, while advancing to tomorrow's finals.
Not to be outdone the 4x400 relay of Evans, LaDonna Begelton, Melonie Barrow and Licretia Sibley also raced to an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:38.58. The time was the seventh best of the 39-team field and advances them to Saturday's finals.
The men's 4x100 relay team did not improve on their NCAA provisional time but turned in the third fastest time of the day with a 39.81 to qualify for tomorrow's finals. The relay was a new mix of legs as for the first time this season senior Reggie Hill ran the lead leg in his first event of the season. Hill handed off to junior Julieon Raeburn who turned the baton over to a pair of freshmen, Ivory McCann and Carlos Francis, respectively.
The relays were not the only event that Tech athletes preformed well in through the first two days of the meet.
Decathlete Olavi Paavo scored 6,606 points in placing seventh in the meet. This total was accomplished without the benefit of scoring a single point in the pole vault as he no-heighted.
Tech had a pair of top 15 finishes in the men's hammer throw. Jason Young turned in a throw of 188 feet seven inches (57.49 meters) in placing 12th while Ryan Curry finished 14th going 184-04.00 (56.20 meters).
In the women's javelin throw Shaya Orendorff had a toss of 144-09.00 (44.11 meters) as she placed third out of 14 competitors.
The Texas Relays will continue through tonight and the weekend.
