LUBBOCK, Texas - Two of Texas Tech's track and field athletes competed at the 2002 USA Track and Field Championships in Palo Alto, Calif., last weekend with Shannon Spaulding placing sixth in the 800 and Jason Young placing 10th in the discus.
In racing to a 2:05.73 finish in the 800-meter run, Spaulding, a native of Rockport, Texas, advanced to Sunday's final with the seventh fastest qualifying time. In the finals, she paced her way to a 2:06.02 sixth-place finish. Her time was also the best time for a collegiate-athlete.
Young just missed the finals in the discus throw as his fling of 56.76 meters earned him the 10th best throw at the meet, two spots out of the championship round. The Dallas native had to make a come-from-behind throw as he fouled on his first attempt and only managed a distance of 52.40 on his second try setting up his final attempt.
