Tech Swept by Cal in Tournament Finale

Las Vegas, Nev. - The Texas Tech volleyball team wrapped up play in the UNLV/Gameworks Classic Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 loss to the Cal Goldenbears at the Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas, Nev.
Tech (3-3) hung tough with the Golden Bears early in the first game before the Red Raiders .023 hitting percentage started to loom large. Cal pulled away from Tech with the game knotted at 14 as the Bears scored seven of the next eight points and took a 1-0 lead, 30-22.
Cal (6-0) took a 2-0 lead in the match as it held Tech to just .057 hitting en route to a 30-19 win. The Red Raiders tallied just 11 kills with nine errors on 35 attempts and did not record a block.
The sweep was completed as the Bears proved too much for Tech and took the third and final game, 30-22. Outside hitter, Mia Jerkov, led all players with 17 kills in the match while Jessy Herrera recorded a match best 10 blocks, her sixth double digit block match of the season.
Senior Melissa McGehee was the lone Red Raider to earn All-tournament honors, her second honor of the season.
The Red Raiders will next be in action on Friday, Sept. 13, in its home opener against Clemson at 7 p.m. The match will be the first of the Four Points Sheraton/Red Raider Classic. On Saturday the Tigers will play Arizona State and the tournament will conclude with Tech and the Sundevils on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
