LUBBOCK, Texas - This weekend the Texas Tech track and field teams will host the first of three consecutive indoor meets with the Red Raider Open on Saturday in the Athletic Training Center. The field events will start off the meet at 11 a.m., with the running events set to begin at 12:30 p.m. and proceed on a rolling schedule.
Some of the nation's elite collegiate and professional track athletes are scheduled to compete this weekend. Tech's Licretia Sibley (Fort Worth, Texas) looks to be the favorite in the 400M as she is currently ranked 11th in Trackwire's Dandy Dozen. The women's 1,600-meter relay should be the class act in the meets final race as they are currently ranked seventh, but Baylor and Texas-El Paso will field solid teams and should push Tech to the finish.
Several ranked male athletes will also be competing this weekend as Abilene Christian is scheduled to compete and is always strong in the sprints and distance races. Tech will feature its school record holder in Jonathan Johnson (Abilene, Texas) in the 800M while Baylor boasts Trackwire's fifth ranked 400M-athlete in Darold Williamson. UTEP brings with it a pair of strong field athletes with Adrian Ghioroaie and Henderson Dottin nationally ranked in the triple jump and high jump, respectively. But the main event of the meet should be the men's 1,600-meter relay. Tech is nationally ranked at fourth and won the national title during the indoor season last year, while the Red Raiders are ranked eighth.
Several other athletes will be competing unattached and should make this one of the most competitive meets Tech has hosted. The ATC is located at the south end of Jones Stadium on the corner of 6th and Boston. Admission is free and the doors open at 9:30 a.m.
