Tech Track Gets Two Provisional Qualifiers in First Home Meet

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech track and field teams got into full swing Saturday as the Red Raiders hosted the first of three consecutive indoor meets at the Athletic Training Center with the Red Raider Open.
Mike Beasley (Wylie, Texas) and Jonathan Johnson (Abilene, Texas) both turned in NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the high jump and 800-meter run, respectively. Beasley's mark of 7-feet 1-inch (2.16m) was good enough for second place, while Johnson's time of 1:50.24 earned the sophomore top honors in his event.
Ken Wilson (Lewisville, Texas) also took top honors as Tech placed 1-3 in the pole vault. Wilson's mark of 17-01 (5.21m) established a new personal record for the junior out of Lewisville High, while Buster McLain (Gruver, Texas) and Jared Thornhill (Snyder, Texas) placed second and third, respectively, as they each cleared 16-07.25 (2.05m).
Geralda Dukuly (Grand Prairie, Texas) turned in a pair of top five finishes as she placed second in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump with leaps of 39-07.75 (12.08m) and 18-09.25 (5.72m), respectively. Freshman Clifton Eddington (Dallas, Texas) placed second in the triple jump with a distance of 48-11.5 (14.92m) and fourth in the long jump, 22-10.5 (6.97m) in his first meet at a Red Raider.
Jason Young (Dallas, Texas) and Olivia Clardy (Abilene, Texas) both placed first in the men's and women's weight throw with a tosses of 58-04.5 (17.79m) and 52-08.25 (16.06m), respectively.
Tech went 1-2 in the women's 400M as Rachelle Evans (Dallas, Texas) and Licretia Sibley (Fort Worth, Texas) ran 55.36 and 55.75, respectively. Brionne Yosten, Tracie Akerhielm, and Abby Schubert placed 4-6 in the 3000M. The women's 4x400-meter relay team ran a 3:43.73 as they placed third behind UTEP and Baylor, while the men raced to a second place time of 3:11.16.
Tech will be at the ATC again this weekend as it hosts the Red Raider Classic on Sat., Feb. 1. Field events are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. and the running events are set to race at 12:30 p.m.
