LUBBOCK, Texas - The Big 12 Conference announced yesterday the Big 12 Conference volleyball postseason awards of which Texas Tech's Kelly Johnson was named honorable mention. The team wrapped up its season last Saturday against Kansas, finishing the year with an 11-18 record.
Johnson was a conference leader finishing the season second in the conference with 364 kills, averaging 4.85 a game. She had 559 kills on the year, just one short of holding Tech's record with kills in a season. Johnson also held a team high 33 aces and was third on the team with 287 digs. In non-conference play, she was named the tournament MVP of both the Islander Invitational and the Big Orange Bash. In Tech's 3-1 loss to Nebraska, she became the all-time career kill leader, surpassing the previous record of 1,333 held by Melissa McGehee. She enters her senior campaign with career numbers of 1,471 kills, 96 aces and 3,849 attempts, another school record.
Previous honors include 2002 first team and 2001 Newcomer of the Year.
