LINCOLN, Neb. - The Texas Tech men's track and field team placed 2nd while the women's team finished 3rd at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational Saturday night at the Bob Devaney Sports Complex in their final meet before the conference indoor championships.
Mike Beasley (Abilene, Texas) improved his standing on the NCAA's descending order list in the high jump as he leapt to a new indoor personal record (PR) of 7-feet, 2.25-inches in a first-place effort. The Red Raiders would go one-two in the high jump as Chad Pharis (Vernon, Texas) set a new PR at 7'-0.25".
Tech also claimed the top two positions in both the men's and women's 400-meter dash. Albert Booker (Trent, Texas) and Jason Lovell (Reseada, Calif.) ran 47.7 and 48.30, respectively, while on the women's side, the duo of Rachelle Evans (Dallas, Texas) and Licretia Sibley (Fort Worth, Texas) turned in times of 54.81 and 54.87, respectively.
In the final event of the night, the 1,600m-relays, both the men's and the women's teams had to hold off hard-charging Nebraska teams to win. The women ran first. LaToya Fry (Mansfield, Texas) ran the opening leg before giving way to Evans in a split time of 58.1. Evans would complete her two laps around the track in 54.7 seconds and give way to Tori Polk (Hewitt, Texas). Polk ran a 56.2 and gave way to Sibley. Sibley ran the fastest leg on the team as her 53.5 gave the Red Raiders a first-place time of 3:43.00 to the Husker's 3:43.46.
On the men's side, Booker got Tech out to an early lead as the Red Raiders led wire-to-wire. Booker gave way to Lovell in a time of 47.8 and Booker proceeded to race to a 47.8 split before giving way to Johnson. Johnson turned in the fastest time of the quartet at 47.6. For the first time this year, Julieon Raeburn (Trincity, Trinidad) ran the anchor leg of the relay and had to fight off the rust and closing Husker runner to give the Red Raiders a first-place time of 3:11.67.
This weekend's meet was the final tune-up for the Big 12 Indoor Championships as the teams will have next weekend off. The conference championships will also be held at the Bob Devaney Sports Complex in Lincoln.
