Lubbock, Texas - Under less than ideal weather conditions the Texas Tech track and field teams were still able to turn in eight NCAA Regional qualifying marks and take home 18 gold-medals in the Red Raider Invitational Saturday at R.P. Fuller Stadium.
Albert Booker (Trent, Texas) turned in a pair of regional qualifying marks in the 200-meter dash (21.21) and the 400 (47.51) while Jason Young (Dallas, Texas) placed first in both the hammer throw and the discus with marks of 182-feet, 11-inches and 184'-6", respectively, both regional qualifying distances.
The two regional marks from the women's team both came in field events as Shaya Oredorff (Renton, Wash.) posted an event-best mark of 148'-5" in the javelin and Megan Schuessler (Llano, Texas) took top honors in the discus with a fling of 150'-7".
In vertical jumps, Chad Pharis (Vernon, Texas) took top honors in the high jump as he leapt 6'-10.75" one week after breaking the 7-foot mark for the first time as a Red Raider. Jared Thornhill (Snyder, Texas) placed first in the pole vault with an elevation of 16'-2.75". Both Pharis' and Thornhills' marks are NCAA Regional qualifying marks.
Just two weeks into the outdoor season, the Red Raiders have posted a combined total of 10 regional qualifying marks.
Next up for Tech will be the 76th Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. For a list of Red Raiders qualifying for the Texas Relays visit www.texassports.com. Those not traveling to Austin, Texas, will be headed to Tarleton State University for the Tarleton Relays.
