Tech Distance Runners Have Strong Showing at ASU Relays

Lubbock, Texas - Despite only traveling six athletes to the ASU David Moble Relays in San Angelo, Texas, this weekend, the Texas Tech men placed 10th with 15 points and the women finished seventh with 41 points.
For the men's team, freshman Kyle Atwood (Muleshoe, Texas) and Dwayne Benoit (Abilene, Texas) scored a combined total of 10 points in the 800-meter run. Atwood's time of 1:50.68 earned him a NCAA regional meet berth and placed him third, while Benoit's mark of 1:52.01 scored four points as a fifth-place finisher. Adam Lawless (Bellevue, Wash.) won his heat in the 800 but did not score in the event. The sophomore did manage to score the final five men's team points in the 1,500 as he finished fourth with in a time of 4:14.66.
On the women's side, sophomore Brionne Yoston (Hereford, Texas) won both the 800 and the 1,500 scoring 20 points with times of 2:16.36 and 4:37.75, respectively. Stefanie Clahoun (Goliad, Texas) turned in a third-place finish in the 800 with a mark of 2:20.65 and finished fourth in the 1,500 with a time of 4:48.53. Freshman Katie Leonard (Burkeburnett, Texas) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase and lowered her school record to 11:16.26 as she accounted for the final 10 points from the women's team.
After two solid weekends on the track, the majority of the Texas Tech men and the women's teams will not compete at the Michael Johnson Invitational in Waco, Texas, next weekend. Next up for the Red Raiders will be the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, the weekend of April 24-26.
