AUSTIN, Texas - The Red Raiders produced four NCAA Midwest Regional qualifying marks during day two of the 76th Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas.
Once again it was the field events which produced all four regional qualifiers, two in the men's pole vault and one in both the men's and women's hammer throws.
Jason Young (Dallas, Texas) added a foot to last weekend's performance, in the hammer throw, with a toss of 185-feet, 11-inches placing him 10th in the competition. The mark improves what was the fourth-best toss in the Big 12 entering the weekend and betters his regional qualifying mark. Olivia Clardy (Abilene, Texas) turned in a 12th-place finish with a mark of 172'-1" in the hammer, shattering her personal record (PR) by nearly 14 feet and missing setting the school record by just four inches. The mark was the sophomore's first regional qualifying mark of the season.
Both Jared Thornhill (Snyder, Texas) and Ken Wilson (Lewisville, Texas) improved their marks in the pole vault Thursday. Wilson placed third in section 'b' vaulting 16'-4.75", while Thornhill tied for ninth with the same height, with more misses at lower heights. Both athletes had already qualified for the regional meet in May.
Tracie Akerhielm (Sulpher Springs, Texas) ran a solid 5,000 Thursday evening as she led five of the 12 laps and finished third with a time of 17:24.11. Bridget Tidwell (Crawford, Texas) also competed in the 3.1 mile race turning in a seventh-place mark of 17:43.99.
Tech had an athlete in section 'b' of both the men's and women's 400-meter hurdles in freshmen Marlon Odom (Killeen, Texas) and Karletha Cook (Dallas, Texas). Cook placed fifth in her heat with a time of 1:03.73. The mark bettered her finish of a week ago, but is not her fastest this year. Odom turned in the fastest time of his young career posting a 56.29 seventh-place finish in his heat.
Day three will see Tech athletes compete in 13 events starting at 9:30 a.m. Complete results from day two as well as entry lists for the remaineder of the meet can be found at www.texassports.com.
