Women's Golf In 12th After Round One

LUBBOCK, Texas - In its first appearance of the season, the Texas Tech golf squad shot 314 to place in a 12th place tie after round one today at the Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. The squad finished 15th last year at the tournament.
After taking a medical red shirt last season, Dukes made her first collegiate appearance in over a year. Dukes shot a two over par 75 to tie in 12th. Junior Megan Hull shot a 77 for a 26th place tie.
Junior Kim Kolb shot an 80 to place in a 11-way tie for 50th. Freshman Leslie Wall and junior Sheila Mendez finished one stroke behind Kolb with 81, tying for 61st. Christine Kovalcik, competing as an individual, finished in 96th after shooting a first round 93.
No. 18 UNM leads the 17-team field with a three over-par 295. Rounding out the top five are No. 4 Oklahoma State, No. 2 Pepperdine, UNLV and Brigham Young University who is tied with No. 21 Arizona State. Texas A&M, Baylor, TCU, No. 23 Tulsa and New Mexico State enter round two in a seventh place tie. The University of Texas-El Paso is tied with Tech for 12th. Rounding out the field are San Diego State, Colorado State, Hawaii and Wyoming. Kailin Downs of New Mexico is leading the field with a three under par 70.
