Women's Golf Opens Up Season With Seventh Place Tie

LUBBOCK, Texas - The women's golf team finished in a tie for seventh place today at the Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., today after a first round finish of 12th. The team shot 927 (313,298,316), 12 strokes ahead of No. 21 Arizona State.
Senior Stephanie Dukes entered today's round in a 26th place tie and improved to a four-way tie for 16th. Dukes shot 75 all three rounds in her first collegiate appearance in over a year as she sat out last season due to injury. Junior Megan Hull shot a 10 over-par 229 (77,76,76) for a 27th tie finish.
Junior Sheila Mendez entered today in a 38th place tie and fell to a 42nd place tie after shooting 235 (81,73,81). Junior Kim Kolb finished in a tie for 53rd with rounds of 80,74,84. Freshman Leslie Wall finished in a 73rd place tie after shooting 245 (81,80,84). As an individual, Christine Kovalcik shot a 259 (93,78,88) for a 94th place finish.
No. 18 New Mexico won the tournament with a three-over par 871. UNM's Kailin Downs was the individual winner with a score of 212.. No. 4 Oklahoma State, No. 23 Tulsa, No. 2 Pepperdine and Brigham Young round out the top five teams.
Texas A&M placed in sixth with Texas Tech, University of Las Vegas, Texas Christian University and New Mexico State finishing in a seventh place tie. San Diego State, Baylor, University of Texas-El Paso, No. 21 Arizona State, Hawaii, Colorado State and Wyoming round out the 17-team field.
Tech will make its next appearance Oct. 6 at the Roadrunner Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M.
