Track Finishes First and Second at the 2004 Quad

Texas Tech took to the course for the second consecutive day today, hosting the 2004 Quad featuring Baylor, UTEP, UNT, SMU and the UTSA women at the Athletic Training Center in Lubbock, Texas. The women's team took first with 163.50 points, ahead of No. 14 Baylor while the No. 13 Texas Tech men's team took home the silver with 140.
The field events made a good showing on the day with four Red Raiders finishing first. Chad Pharis finished third in the high jump with a mark of 6'-5.5" (1.97) while on the women's side, Lacy Wilson set a personal best mark of 5'-10.75"(1.80) for a second-place finish.
The men's team fared well in the long jump with Clifton Eddington taking home top honors with a mark of 23'-3.25" (7.03m). Tori Polk and Geralda Dukuly had marks of 19'-7.5" (5.98m) and 18'-1.75"(5.53m) for second and fifth place finishes, respectively.
On the women's side of the triple jump, Tech had three competitors finish in the top five. Geralda Dukuly finished in second with 40'-1.5" (12.23m) while Janalyn Givens turned in a third-place finish with a mark of 38'-4.75" (11.70m). Bliss Williams finished in fifth with a jump of 34'-5" (10.49m).
In the weight throw, Brad Kring threw 40'-7"(12.37m) to finish in third. Megan Schuessler took home the gold with a mark of 45'-3.5" (13.80m) in the shot put while Daniel Fuller was Tech's top competitor in the shot put with a mark of 49'-1.50" (14.97m).
The womens pole vault swept the top four spots led by Krista Grantham who is now in possession of the second best mark in school history with a vault of 12'-5.5" (3.80m). Dana Rosenbladt with a mark of 11'-11.75" (3.65m) finished in second. Rosenbladt is coming off an appearance at the Pole Vault Summit where she set the indoor school record of 12'-7.5" (3.85m). Kelley Schulz and Ashley Rodgers turned marks of 11'-5.75" (3.50m), finishing third and fourth respectively.
The women's would not overshadow the mens team as the men turned in the top five finishes. Sage Thames, after a red shirt 2003 season, finished first with a mark of 16'-1.25"(4.91m). Seth Harris and Randall Klaus both cleared 15'-7.25"(4.76m) to finish second and third, respectively.
The running events added four gold finishes to the count. Shawon Harris secured his first gold medal as a Red Raider in the 55m hurdles with a time of 7.50, .18 seconds better than his prelim time. Jonathan Johnson claimed yet another first place honor as he ran a 1:09.81 in the 600. This is the second fastest time in school history, behind a record of 1:08.81 set by Johnson.
In the 200, Kendrick Smith ran a 22.44 to finish in third while Shereefa Lloyd finished in second with a time of 24.09. Albert Booker and Matt Stewart finished second and fifth for the Red Raiders in the 400 with times of 47.35 and 48.22. Another duo on the women's side, Licretia Sibley and Rachelle Evans, finished third and fourth with marks of 56.05 and 56.14.
The women's team fared well in the mile as Brionne Yosten with a time of 4:56.98 and Tracie Akerhielm with a time of 5:04.50 finished in second and third, respectively. Joseph McCellon and Benson Cheserek finished third and fourth in the 3000 with times of 8:37.19 and 8:38.22 while Yosten out paced the competition with a time of 9:52.36. Bridget Tidwell ran the 3000 in 10:08.78 to finish in fourth.
The meet concluded with the 4x400, of which both the mens team and women's team are ranked by the Dandy Dozen. The No. 11 women's 4x400 team, of Polk, Lloyd, Evans and Sibley, won the race with a time of 3:41.84, a top five mark in Tech school history. The No. 8 men's 4x400, of Stewart, Booker, Bryan Scott and Jonathan Johnson, raced closely with the No.2 Baylor men's team, but finished in second with a mark of 3:11.15.
