Conference Championships Await Track & Field

LUBBOCK, Texas - After a regular season of school records broken, provisional qualifying marks set and national rankings, the Texas Tech track and field teams head to Lincoln, Neb., to compete in the 8th annual Big 12 Conference Championships on Fri. Feb. 27 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
The Big 12 conference boasts a competitive field with seven mens and three womens teams ranked in Trackwires Top 25 Power Rankings. Tech is at the top of the performance list with many athletes earning top five listings. Junior Tyree Gailes is ranked second in the conference in the 55m dash with a time of 6.42, with freshman J. Shon Colquitt and Jody Putman in fourth and fifth, respectively, with times of 6.70 and 6.72.
Tech' s No. 10 mile relay team of juniors Matt Stewart, Albert Booker, Derron Herah and Jonathan Johnson, is second in the conference with a time of 3:09.41. Two of the members are also in the top five in other events. Booker is second in the 200 with a mark of 21.13, a provisional qualifying mark and third in the 400 with a time of 47.06. In the 600y run, Johnson is second with a time of 1:09.81. Johnson is fifth in the 800 in both the conference and nation with a time of 1:49.56, a provisional qualifying time.
In field events, junior Jared Thornhill is second in the pole vault with a mark of 17'-5.0" (5.31m). In the triple jump, sophomore Clifton Eddington is third with a mark of 50'-1.5" (15.28m) while senior Jason Young is fifth in the Big 12 in the weight throw with a throw of 61'-0" (18.60m).
The No. 10 mile relay team, sophomore Tori Polk, junior Shereefa Lloyd, senior Rachelle Evans and junior Licretia Sibley, sits at second with a time of 3:37.04, a provisional qualifying mark. Shereefa Lloyd leads the 55m dash, No. 1 with a provisional qualifying mark and time of 6.93. In the 400, Sibley is in fourth with a time of 54.18.
Junior Brionne Yosten is third in the 1000 with a time of 2:50.05 and fourth in the mile with a time of 4:47.61. Freshman Lacy Wilson is tied for third in the high jump with a height of 5'-10.75" (1.80m).
The meet is scheduled to begin Fri. at 9:30 a.m. and will warp up Sat. at 6:45 p.m. A complete schedule, heat sheets and live results will be available on the Nebraska website at Huskers.com on the track and field page under home meet info.
