LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior right-hander Michael McGowan allowed just two earned runs over 7 1/3 innings and while Ryan Andrews went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Red Raiders to a 5-3 win over the Clemson Tigers on Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field. The win gives Texas Tech the series win 2-1 as Tech won on Saturday 13-10.
Clemson (8-9) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning on a sacrifice fly out by Tony Sipp that plated second baseman Herman Demmink. Demmink struckout as the leadoff hitter in the inning but reached first on wild pitch by Tech starter Michael McGowan.
The Red Raiders (15-7) took over the lead in the bottom half of the inning as Tech plated three runs on four hits. Junior catcher Cooper Fouts picked up an RBI single while Michael Mask ripped a two-RBI double to put the Red Raiders in the 3-1 lead.
Clemson came back in the top half of the fourth with a single run as third baseman Brad McCann led off with a walk and scored on a double play groundout by Brady Everett.
Texas Tech plated two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on back-to-back RBI doubles by Josh Haney and Ryan Andrews.
Steve Gooch came in to replace Michael McGowan in the seventh as McGowan had thrown 7 1/3 allowing two earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts. Gooch would allow just one run and two hits over the next 2 2/3 innings to pick up his second save in as many days.
Michael McGowan earned the win for the Red Raiders and moved to 2-0 while Robert Rohrbaugh suffered the loss for Clemson and fell to 0-1 on the year. Rohrbaugh gave up four earned runs on five hits striking out two and issuing two walks.
Texas Tech will get one more non-conference tune-up as the Red Raiders will face the Houston Cougars on Tuesday in Midland. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the First American Bank Ballpark (home of the Midland Rockhounds).
