Track and Field Finishes Ahead of Pack

LUBBOCK, Texas - Finishing ahead of two conference opponents, the Texas Tech track and field teams finished in first at the UTEP Invitational in El Paso, Texas. The women's team finished first with 200.50 points, with the second-place Texas A&M Aggies turning in 113.50 points. The men's team had 165 points with Texas A&M in second with 131 points.
The women's team turned in nine regional qualifying marks with two school records being broken.
Junior Shereefa Lloyd was a force to reckon with turning in two first-place finishes with two regional qualifying times. Lloyd finished the 100m in a time of 11.64 and the 200m in 23.43. Junior Licretia Sibley took home first in the 400m with a time of 52.22, also replacing a school record time set last year of 53.11 by Sibley. Senior Rachelle Evans finished third in the 400m with a time of 54.80.
Freshman Kathy Nwagbo turned in eight points for the Red Raiders in the 800m with a time of 2:19.03 and a second-place finish. Junior Brionne Yosten finished third with a time of 2:20.15. Yosten would turn in more points finishing first in the 1500m in a time of 4:38.71. Junior Stefanie Calhoun finished in second with a time of 4:41.27. In the 5000m, Katie Leonard finished second with a time of 18:21.01 with senior Tracie Akerhielm finishing third with a time of 18:29.14.
Freshman Staci Benefield finished third in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:07.62.
Tech would take home top honors in the 4x100 with the team turning in a first and third place finish. Tech's "A" team finished first in a time of 46.82 with the "B" team finishing third in 48.89. The women's 4x400 team set a regional qualifying mark of 3:38.03 for a first-place finish.
Freshmen Lacy Wilson and Misty Coley finished second and third, respectively, in the high jump along with regional qualifying marks. Both Wilson and Coley cleared a height of 5'-10.0". The women's pole vaulters added a pair of regional qualifying marks clearing a height of 12'-7.50". This height is a school record for both freshman Kelley Schulz and sophomore Krista Grantham.
Sophomore Tori Polk took home first in the long jump with a mark of 19'-10.75" with junior Geralda Dukuly placing third jumping 19'-2.50". Dukuly took home first and a regional qualifying mark in the triple jump with a mark of 41'-5.75". Janalyn Givens finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 38'-11.75".
In the hammer, Olivia Clardy finished third with a throw of 168'-10".
The men's team turned in seven regional qualifying marks today to add to the seven set last weekend at the TTU Invitational.
On the men's side, Tyree Gailes finished third with a time of 10.47 in the 100m dash. In the 200m, junior Albert Booker took home first with a 21.00 while junior Matt Stewart finished third in the 400m with a time of 47.98.
Tech took home the top two finishes in the 800m with junior Jonathan Johnson running a 1:50.13 for a first-place finish and a regional qualifying mark. Freshman Benson Cheserek finished second with a time of 1:55.92. Cheserek also placed, third, in the 1500m with a time of 3:58.63.
Freshman Shawon Harris finished second in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.38. In the 400m hurdles, Tech took home the top three marks with freshman Bryan Scott leading the team with a time of 52.86. Harris finished second with a time of 53.45 while Chris Hickman finished third in a time of 53.71.
Tech's 4x100 team finished second with a time of 40.55. The men's 4x400 team cleared a regional qualifying time by nearly three seconds, finishing first in a time of 3:07.81. Junior Chad Pharis tied for third in the high jump clearing a height of 6'-8.75". The men's pole vault turned in four regional qualifying marks with Jared Thornhill finishing first with a mark of 17'-10.50". Bobby Most finished second with a mark of 17'-4.50'. Freshman Sage Thames and sophomore Seth Harris cleared heights of 17'-4.50" and 16'-4.75", respectively, to qualify for Regionals.
Freshman Brad Kring finished third in the shot put with a distance of 51'-11.75" while Jason Young earned a regional qualifying mark with a distance 196'-10" in the discus. Young also finished first in the hammer with a mark of 180'-9".
