
Track & Field Makes One Last Meet Before Regionals

LUBBOCK, Texas - Having qualified 35 student-athletes for the 2004 Midwest Regionals, the Texas Tech track and field teams will look to add a couple more as they compete at the ACU Open on Thurs., in Abilene, Texas. Both the women and the No. 20 men's team are coming off the best finishes in school history at the conference meet, fifth and second, respectively.
The team has qualified 35 athletes in 27 events, 17 men and 18 women, for regionals held May 28-29 in College Station, Texas. The top five from each event will advance to Nationals as well as some wild card selections.
Freshman Bryan Scott makes his first appearance in the Dandy Dozen after taking home the gold in the 400m hurdles at the Conference Championships. Scott's finals time of 50.73 earned him an 11th-spot ranking.
Senior Jason Young improved to fifth in the discus after finishing runner-up at the conference Championships with a throw of 198'-4" (60.45m). Junior Jonathan Johnson holds onto his No. 2 spot after turning in his third-consecutive conference title in the 800m with a time of 1:47.12, also a conference record. Johnson is also the anchor leg of the men's 4x400 team who is ranked 12th.
Senior Aki Heikkinen, the 2004 Conference Champion in the decathlon, scored 7,559 points in the decathlon for a new school record. This mark automatically qualified Heikkinen for Nationals and ranks him eighth in the Dandy Dozen.
Junior Shereefa Lloyd had a standout performance at the conference meet with three all-conference honors and nine points for the team. Lloyd is ranked 10th in the 200m dash and is also a member of the No.10 4x400 team.
