LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech track and field teams had one final tune up as they competed at the ACU Open in Abilene, Texas, yesterday. In a strong wind, the team had six marks marked invalid due to windaided times. However this would not stop two Red Raiders, senior Jason Young and freshman Kelley Schulz, from breaking their own school records.
Young broke his previous school record with a throw of 206'-5" (62.91m) in the discus. This is Young's career best throw and the fourth-best throw in the nation. Schulz elevated to another height as she broke the school record for the third time this season with a vault of 13'-3.50" (4.05m). Schulz's previous record was 13'-2.25" set at the Michael Johnson Invitational.
Junior Shereefa Lloyd took home first in both the 100m and 200m dash with times of 11.61 and 23.44. Junior JaToya Moore finished behind Lloyd in the 200m with a second-place finish in a time of 23.93, her best time this season. Although these times met regional qualifying standards, the wind was marked at 4.0 so the marks are invalid.
The women's team took home the top four places in the 400m with junior Licretia Sibley leading the pack with a first-place finish in a time of 55.13. Senior Rachelle Evans finished second in 56.06 while sophomore Ashley Stevens finished third in 56.51. Tori Polk rounded out the team in fourth-place with a time of 56.71, her first appearance in the 400m since the TTU Invitational.
Junior Brionne Yosten posted a time of 2:18.50 in the 800m run to finish in second while distance team members senior Tracie Akerhielm and junior Stefanie Calhoun finished one and two in the 1500 with times of 4:39.81 and 4:47.95.
Junior Dana Rosenbladt tied her career best jump in the pole vault with a jump of 12'-9.50" (3.90m) and a second-place finish.
Junior Olivia Clardy took home first in the discus with a throw of 150'-11" and in the hammer with a throw of 174'-2" (53.10m). Senior Megan Schuessler turned in two second-place finishes, in the shot put and discus, with marks of 44'-1.25" (13.44m) and 146'-1" (44.54m), respectively.
Junior Tyree Gailes ran a 10.42 in the 100m to take home first. This is Gailes sixth regional qualifying time of the season. Junior Albert Booker turned in his second regional qualifying time of the season with a time of 21.12 in the 200m for a third-place finish.
Freshman Bryan Scott finished first in the 400m hurdles with a time of 51.97 for his fourth regional qualifying time of the season.
Junior Chad Pharis jumped 6'-8" (2.03m) in the high jump for a first-place finish while freshman T.J. McClarty cleared 15'-1" (4.60m) in the pole vault for a third-place finish. Freshman Brad Kring threw 54'-6.75" (16.63m) in the shot put for a third-place finish.
