LUBBOCK, Texas - No. 25 Texas Tech erased an eight-run deficit with nine runs in the bottom of the seventh as the Red Raiders outlasted the Baylor Bears in a 19-18 slugfest at Dan Law Field on Saturday afternoon.
The win clinches the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Big 12 Conference Tournament as Missouri held on and defeated Oklahoma State earlier today. Texas Tech is now 37-17 overall and 16-9 in the Big 12. Baylor falls to 27-28 overall and to 13-11 in league play.
Texas Tech took a 10-6 lead into the top of the seventh but that lead would not last as the Bears scored 12 runs in the inning to go ahead 18-10. The 12 run inning was the most given up by Tech in a single frame this season. Kyle Reynolds got the Bears going with a three-run home run and after a walk by Josh Ford, Tyler Bullock put Baylor in the lead 11-10 with a two-run homer. Paul Witt and Reid Brees both picked up RBI hits that ultimately led to a three-run home run by Josh Ford. Texas Tech changed pitchers three times in the inning.
What was good for Baylor in the top half of the seventh, was even better for the Red Raiders in the bottom half. Texas Tech took advantage of three walks, a hit-by-pitch and a Baylor defensive error en route to scoring nine runs in the inning to regain the lead. Junior shortstop Cameron Blair picked up his second home run of the game in the inning when he hit a three-run dinger to left that put Tech back in the lead 19-18. The entire seventh inning lasted an hour and 19 minutes while 27 batters went to the plate for both teams.
Junior reliever Adam Fry (2-0) earned the win for Texas Tech while Corey Gerstner picked up his third save of the season. Abe Woody suffered his first loss of the season for Baylor as he fell to 5-1.
Texas Tech will try and go for the three-game sweep of Baylor on Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field. Tech Head Coach Larry Hays will honor the 2004 senior class just prior to the 1 p.m. first pitch.
