LUBBOCK, Texas - Track and field coaching veteran Steve Silvey has been named recruiting coordinator and assistant men's track and field coach at Texas Tech University, announced today by head track and field coach Wes Kittley. Silvey previously spent two seasons at the University of Oregon, where he assisted in the Ducks' Pac-10 Conference Championship efforts in 2003.
"I look forward to joining the winning team of head coach Wes Kittley and his staff," Silvey said. "I want to help them achieve their goal of building a Big 12 Championship team and win a national championship."
Silvey brings an impressive resume to the South Plains having been a part of 13 consecutive national championship teams from 1994-2000 at the University of Arkansas. While at Arkansas and Oregon, he played a role in 18 Southeastern Conference and Pac-10 Conference championships. Silvey also is the winningest junior college coach in history with 15 national championships at Blinn College from 1987-94.
Success was almost immediate upon Silvey's arrival at Oregon in 2001. He aided in taking a UO team that finished fifth in the Pac-10 in 2001 to second place in 2002, followed by a conference championship in 2003.
During the 1984-87 seasons at Texas A&M, his recruiting efforts assisted in the program's rise as a perennial top 10 program in the mid- to late-80s.
Silvey's track record on the recruiting trail over the past 23 years has produced over 600 All-Americans, 22 of which competed in various World Track & Field Championships. Thirty-four student-athletes under his tutelage competed in the last four Olympic Games with 11 garnering Olympic medals.
Some of the Olympic caliber athletes coached by Silvey include Tim Montgomery, Brian Lewis and Henry Neal in the 100 meters and Darnell Hall and Lamont Smith in the 400 meters.
