LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior outfielder Cody Fuller went 3-for-3 with an RBI to help lead the Varsity over the Alumni 4-0 in the 2005 Texas Tech Alumni Game played at Dan Law Field on Saturday afternoon.
"This was a great game in a lot of ways," said head coach Larry Hays. "Most importantly this game gives our team the chance to see the success that our former players have had not only at Tech but in their pro careers. We are one big family around here and it really means a lot to these guys to put on that Double T."
This year's alumni game featured 15 former Red Raiders who are currently playing professional baseball as well as the 2005 squad. Former Red Raiders making the trip to Lubbock were Keith Ginter, Scooter Jordan, Gera Alvarez, Bryon Smith, Christian Colonel, Saul Bustos, Juan Razo, Josh Brady, Steve Rowe, Michael Mask, Steve Watkins, Blake McGinley, Steven Thomas, Joe Dillon, Brandon Roberson and Travis Driskill.
The Varsity jumped out to a 2-0 lead after scoring single runs in the first two frames of the game. Senior shortstop and preseason All-American Cameron Blair got Tech going with a two-out base hit and junior first baseman Trey Stewart moved him to third with a single. An RBI fielder's choice by senior second baseman Carey Avants plated Blair for the first run of the game.
In the second inning, an RBI single by junior left fielder Chris Williams scored Cody Fuller pushing the Varsity lead to 2-0. Fuller reached on a one-out single and moved into scoring position on a single to left field by senior catcher Cooper Fouts.
The Varsity added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth when freshman Josh Wilson reached on double and then scored on an RBI single by Fuller. Junior infielder Patrick Smart plated the final run of the game when he belted an RBI double allowing Fuller score from first.
Texas Tech opens the 2005 season on Tuesday against the New Mexico Lobos at Dan Law Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. Tickets are currently available through the Texas Tech Athletic Ticket office or at any area United Supermarkets/Select-A-Seat location.
