Tech Sweeps Sprint Medley Relays at Penn

Philadelphia, Penn. - Day two of competition at the Drake and Penn Relays has concluded for Texas Tech track and field. The Red Raiders end the day with two regional qualifying marks and two school records.
The Red Raider men's and women's sprint medley relays claimed titles in the championship event this evening. These are the first titles ever won by Texas Tech at the Penn Relays. The women's squad, JaToya Moore, Shereefa Lloyd, Licretia Sibley and Althea Chambers clocked a school record time of 3:47.50. The men's team, Tyree Gailes, Matt Stewart, Andrae Williams and Jonathan Johnson ran a time of 3:15.08.
In Des Moines, Calhoun clocked a 10:25.52, her third regional qualifying time, in the 3000M steeplechase, crushing her previous school record of 10:40.82. Calhoun finished in second place behind a Minnesota harrier after leading through out the race. With 100 meters to go, Calhoun held strong with a 30-meter lead but tripped after the last hurdle and was passed by a Minnesota harrier. Calhoun recovered and finished the race and was the top Big 12 finisher. Calhoun's time currently ranks her 17th in the nation and sixth in the Big 12 conference.
"Stefanie ran an unbelievable race," said distance coach Burke Binning. "I was truly amazed by her today. I was so proud of her when she crossed the finish line after overcoming a fall like the one she took."
Also at the Drake Relays, the men's 4xMile relay, Kyle Atwood, Benson Cheserek, Haron Lagat and Kevin Chelimo, clocked a time of 16:44.12, good for a silver finish.
At the Penn Relays, the men's 4x100M, comprised of Tyree Gailes, Chris Adams, Matt Stewart and Earvin Parker, clocked a 40.91 and qualified for the finals of the event.
The men's 4x400M, Johnny Jacob, Terry Beard, Adams and Michael Mathieu, finished first in their heat with a time of 3:07.94, a regional qualifying mark. They also qualified for the finals of their event.
On Saturday, in Philadelphia, the men's 4x100M will compete in the finals of the event at 12:20 p.m., the women's 4x400M will run in the finals at 5:15 p.m. and the men's 4x400M relay finals will be held at
Slated for Saturday at the Drake Relays will be Kyle Atwood and Brionne Yosten in the 1500M, Haron Lagat and Benson Cheserek in the 3000M steeplechase, Marlon Odom in the 110M hurdles and Bryan Scott in the 400M hurdles.
