Lubbock, Texas - Select members of Texas Tech track and field will compete in the 2006 Indoor National Championships, in Fayetteville, Ark., Fri-Sat., March 10-11. The Red Raiders will be represented by 11 athletes in seven events.
With the exception of the throws, all events will be held at the Randall Tyson Track Center. Events will begin at 9 a.m. on Fri., March 10 and at 11 a.m. on Sat., March 11. A detailed schedule can be found at www.ncaasports.com.
Traveling on the men's side will be Daryl Burgess and Shawon Harris (60M Hurdles), Zach Glavash (800M), Kevin Chelimo (3000M), Bobby Most and Sage Thames (pole vault) and the 4x400M relay (Glavash, Michael Mathieu, Albert Booker and Andrae Williams). On the women's side, Tori Polk will be competing in the long jump and Misty Coley in the high jump.
Of the 497 athletes competing (not including relay entries), 103 will represent the Southeast Conference and 78 will represent the Big 12. The Texas Longhorns have the most entries with 19, men and women combined. The hosting Arkansas Razorbacks have the most male entries with 11 and the Stanford Cardinal of the PAC-10 have the most female entries with 12.
After a 45th-place finish at the 2004 Indoor Championships and not scoring a point at the 2005 Indoor Championships, the women's squad is looking Polk and Coley to points on the board. Polk enters the weekend ranked No. 5 in long jump after maintaining a top three spot for most of the season. On the men's side, after a 26th-place finish in 2005, points could come from Glavash (800M), Burgess (60M hurdles) and the 4x400M relay, who are all sitting in the top eight in their respective event.
Returning to the Indoor Championships for a second-go-around will be Thames, who finished 13th in 2005, Mathieu and Williams, members of the 4x400M relay that finished sixth in 2005. Most was an All-American in 2003 with a fifth-place finish and Booker was an NCAA qualifier during the 2004 season but fell short of placing. This will be the first trip to Fayetteville for the National Meet for Glavash (as a Red Raider), Chelimo, Burgess, Harris, Polk and Coley.
