Odom Repeats as Big 12 Champion in 110M Hurdles

Waco, Texas - Texas Tech track and field completed competition at the 2006 Big 12 Championships, in Waco, on Sunday. The women's team finished in seventh place with 58.5 points and the men's squad scored 62 points, good for a eighth-place finish. The Red Raiders racked up 28 All-Big 12 honors.
Marlon Odom successfully defended his Big 12 title in the 110M hurdles with a clocking of 13.74. Shawon Harris was fourth in the race with his time of 13.91. Odom and Harris combined for 15 points for the men's team.
"This race was a lot rougher then last year," said Odom. "I hit a few more hurdles. The weather wasn't really a factor because NCAAs was worse last year. I'm glad I got this race out of the way and I'm looking forward to and concentrating on Regionals and Nationals."
Althea Chambers completed her sweep in the 2006 800M titles with her win in the event. Chambers clocked a season best 2:06.74 in the finals to match her 2006 Big 12 Indoor 800M title.
"If you lack confidence in yourself, you are twice defeated in the race of life," explained Chambers. "With confidence, you have won even before you have started."
Jamie Robinson scored eight huge points for the Red Raider men with his second-place finish in the javelin. Robinson, a former decathlete, set three personal bests throughout the competition. He ended the event with a throw of 219'-8", his second regional qualifying mark of the season.
Freshman D'Andra Carter, making her Big 12 Championships debut, marked a bronze finish in the discus with a toss of 179'-5", a new school record and personal best. Patience Knight also scored points for the Tech women in the discus with her toss of 166'-11", good for a sixth-place finish.
Also earning a bronze finish was Harris in the 400M hurdles. Good for his third All-Big 12 honor of the day, Harris clocked a 51.01. On the women's side, racking up a bronze finish, was Lacy Wilson in the high jump. Wilson cleared 5'-8.75".
In the 400M, the Tech men found more crucial points from Michael Mathieu, the fourth-place finisher with a season-best time of 46.43, and Albert Booker, the sixth-place finisher with a time of 46.94.
Mathieu and Booker also scored in the 200M with third and seventh-place finishes, respectively. Mathieu clocked a 21.00 and Booker ran a 21.96.
Freshman Jansen Hyde, after ninth-place finishes in the 110M hurdles, 400M hurdles and the triple, jump, found his first All-Big 12 outdoor honor as the third leg of the men's 4x100M relay that finished in seventh place. Hyde, along with Odom, Harris, and Ryan Varner, combined for a clocking of 40.68.
The women's 4x100M, Melissa Branch, Tia Barginear, Jhavonne Pope and Louise Cox, clocked a 45.77, good for a sixth-place finish. Barginear also earned All-Big 12 honors for her sixth place finish in the 400M hurdles (1:01.51).
In the triple jump, Bobby Evers earned his second All-Big 12 honor of the weekend with his eighth-place finish and a leap of 48'-0". Also finishing in eight was Harrison Benjamin in the shot put. He marked a toss of 58'-1.25".
