Austin, Texas - Marlon Odom and Shawon Harris won Midwest Regional titles in the 110M and 400M hurdles, respectively, on day two of the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships, in Austin, Texas, on Saturday. The top five individuals in each event and the top three relay finishers will earn an automatic bid to the National Championships, in Sacramento, in June.
Odom, after winning the prelims with a school-record clocking of 13.45, clocked a 13.51, the second-fastest time in school history, to secure the win. Teammate Harris finished second with a time of 13.68. Both will be heading to Sacramento in June.
"I felt good!" said Odom. "I wanted to come back strong and show everybody that 13.45 (in the prelims) wasn't a fluke. Shawon (Harris) and I training together has helped both of us. When we were next to each other, it pushed us both. I knew no one would be able to take us down."
Harris took the 400M hurdles title away from teammate Bryan Scott but the duo finished in 1-2 fashion. Harris clocked a 50.40, a new personal best, for the win while Scott clocked a 50.67, his second-best time of the season.
"I'm excited we walked away with a 1-2 finish in both hurdle events," said Harris. "With the experience of our coaching staff and level that we train at, I'm glad we were able to get it done. Hopefully we can continue our success at Nationals."
Jamie Robinson will be making his first appearance at the National Championships as a Red raider after a fifth-place finish in the javelin. Robinson marked a throw of 215'-8", the second-best mark of his career.
Patience Knight and D'Andra Carter combined for fifth and sixth-place finishes in the discus throw. Knight marked a personal-best toss of 173'-9", securing her trip to Nationals. Carter threw a 172'-8" and may earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships.
