LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech track teams have been proving themselves recently as shown by the Jan. 30th edition of the Trackwire Top 25 Poll, as the women have soared to fifth place with the men returning the poll at 20th.
After garnering two more automatic and one provisional mark the weekend of January 26th, the Red Raider women moved up 14 places from a tie for 19th. The team now has three automatic marks (from Irene Kimaiyo and Sally Kipyego), as well as four NCAA provisional qualifications, including two pole vault.
The Trackwire's Dandy Dozen list favors Tech's two automatic qualifiers: Kipyego is listed first in the 3000M with teammate Kimaiyo third in the country; Kipyego is first with Kimaiyo fifth in the 5000M.
The men reentered the Trackwire rankings after dropping out after the first week of competition. The Red Raiders are currently tied for 20th after winning the Dan DeHart Invitational as a team on January 27th. The men earned their first provisional marks last weekend with four men qualifying.
Competition for the squads continues this weekend as the team hosts its second home event of the indoor season, the Texas Tech Open. Action begins 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3, from the Athletic Training Center.
