LUBBOCK, Texas - After a weekend in which Texas Tech won six Big 12 titles, the most at a single indoor conference championship, several Red Raider members will be in action at two Last Chance meets being held this weekend. Four Red Raiders will be competing in field events in Fayetteville, Ark., while eight will be headed back to Ames, Iowa, for running events.
All of Tech's competitors for this weekend finished with all-conference honors, including five finishing in the top three of their respective events.
Traveling to the site of the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., for this week's Last Chance Qualifier will be Lacy Wilson, Lindsey Walesheck, Amanda Alley and Bobby Evers. Making the return trip to Ames, Iowa, for the Cyclones' Last Chance Meet will be hurdlers Jansen Hyde, Marlon Odom, and Omo Osaghae, along with Zach Glavash and the relay team of Brandon Washington, Tim Foster, Rodney Mims and Bryan Scott.
Both Wilson and Walesheck are coming off of school-record marks that they set in their respective events to earn second and third, respectively, at the Big 12 meet. Wilson broke her own previous record of 5'-11.25" from 2005 when she cleared 6'-0" at the conference meet to earn the silver medal. Walesheck cleared a height of 13'-5.25" in the pole vault to break the 2005 record of Britni Lawrence. The mark earned Walesheck her personal best and third place overall.
Earning PR marks in their events last week and scheduled to compete in Arkansas are sophomore Alley and junior Evers. Alley earned her second NCAA provisional mark of the season when she cleared a height of 13'-1.5" (tying the previous school record) in the women's pole vault. The Crosbyton, Texas, native finished in fifth place to earn her second career all-conference indoor honor. Evers, competing in the men's long jump, leapt to a personal best distance of 25'-0.5" to finish in bronze position. The junior Red Raider earned his second NCAA provisional mark with the distance after jumping 24'-10.5" at the Tyson Invitational in his first qualification.
Tech's reigning Big 12 60M hurdle champion will return to his track of victory when senior Odom travels to the Lied Recreation Center to compete in the hurdles at the Last Chance meet. The Killeen, Texas, native has already notched eight provisional marks in the 60M hurdles, the most of any Red Raider. Freshman Osaghae is coming off of his strongest performance as he clocked a time of 7.91 to earn the first qualifying mark of his young career. Osaghae finished in third place to earn the bronze medal and his first All-Big 12 honor. Finishing in sixth for the hurdle crew was Hyde, who is in search of his first qualifying mark after earning a PR last week with a run of 7.96.
Also returning to Ames will be the fourth-place 4x400M relay squad, who earned their first provisional mark of the indoor season on Saturday. The team comprised of Brandon Washington, Tim Foster, Rodney Mims and Bryan Scott finished with a time of 3:08.36, which currently sits as the eighth best mark of any collegiate squad.
Scheduled to compete in the 800M is Big 12 runner-up Glavash. The senior All-American clocked a time of 1:50.57 to take the silver at the Big 12 meet on Saturday. He is searching for his first qualifying mark of the season.
The Last Chance Qualifier from Fayetteville, Ark., will take place on Friday, March 2nd, with Tech's first competitor, Wilson, schedule for 12:00 p.m. Walesheck, Alley and Evers are tentatively scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday's Last Chance Meet from Ames, Iowa, will begin with 60M hurdle prelims at 11:20 a.m., with semi-finals at 1:10 p.m. and the finals at 3:40 p.m. The men's 800M will take place at 2:40 p.m., with the men's 4x400M wrapping up the meet at 4:10 p.m.
