LUBBOCK, Texas - Sophomore sensation, Sally Kipyego, was honored as the Big 12 Indoor Performer of the Year as announced by the conference office Thursday. Kipyego was given the accolade through a vote of all Big 12 head track and field coaches after the championships last week.
Kipyego was awarded with the individual high-point winner on the women's side at the Big 12 Indoor Championships after tallying 22.5 points. She claimed first place in her individual events for the mile (4:38:18) and the 3,000-meter (9:11:41), qualifying her for the NCAA competition with both automatic marks. As the anchor for the distance medley relay (11:18:41), the Red Raider came from behind to win, defeating Oklahoma by .08 of a second.
The Performer of the Year award adds to Kipyego's list of honors that she has accumulated during her time at Texas Tech. The Kenya native finished her cross country season as the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, as well as the Mountain Region, USTFCCCA and Honda Sports athlete of the year.
