LUBBOCK, Texas - In a win that was long overdue, the Texas Tech women's tennis team tabbed in their first Big 12 win today, defeating the Missouri Tigers. The Lady Raiders now sit 8-7, 1-4 in conference, as they host the Kansas Jayhawks tomorrow, April 1, at 10 a.m.
Tech jumped out with an early 1-0 lead after all three pairs dominated in doubles. The No. 1 duo of Janet Durham and Samantha van der Drift clinched the match for the Raiders 8-3, improving their record to 11-4, 3-2 in Big 12.
In singles, the momentum continued as freshman Kerryn Potgieter was the first to strike for the Lady Raiders winning over Katelyn Dunham 6-0, 6-2. Next van der Drift handled Mizzou's Amanda Pratzel, 6-1, 6-0, advancing her record to 11-4, 3-3 in conference.
In the No. 6 spot, Raquel Wagner escaped with the only point for the Lady Tigers, defeating junior Brenna Jackson, 6-2, 6-2. Soon after, Tech freshman Maria Jose Andres stepped up and secured the win for her team beating Kaitlyn McKenzie 6-3, 6-4.
At No. 2, Lady Raider senior Lakann Wagley also found herself a win against Chrissy Svetlic, breaking a two match slump. Wagley, now 9-6, 3-3 in Big 12, said she feels this win couldn't have come at a better time for her team.
"I'm glad we finally got this win under our belt," said Tech captain Wagley. "After getting the doubles point, the team was really positive and we all came out strong and aggressive."
Head Coach Cari Groce couldn't agree more as she was very pleased with her team's turnaround and effort in today's match.
"I am very relieved to get this win out of our way," said Groce. "The team really came together all in the same day and just started believing in themselves. I am very proud of these girls because they played the way they are capable of."
The Lady Raiders are set to take on the Lady Jayhawks tommorrow at 10 a.m. at the McLeod Tennis Center. For more information and complete results, visit www.texastech.com.
