Lady Raider Tennis Edges Kansas, 5-2

LUBBOCK, Texas - After a tough 5-2 loss to the Texas Longhorns on Thursday, the Texas Tech women's tennis team found back-to-back conference wins defeating Missouri yesterday, 6-1, and Kansas today, 5-2. Tech improves to 9-7, 2-4 in Big 12, as they next hit the road to for three tough conference matches.
To begin the day, Tech went head-to-head with the Lady Jayhawks in doubles competition. The No. 3 freshmen pair of Maria Jose Andres and Kerryn Potgieter had the first win defeating Kansas, 8-1. They were soon followed by Lakann Wagley and Brenna Jackson, who pulled away with the 8-4 win and clinched the doubles point for the Raiders.
At No. 1, the duo of Janet Durham and Samantha van der Drift had a tough match against Jayhawks Elizaveta Avdeeva and Edina Horvath. Avdeeva and Horvath entered the match 4-0 in conference, being among the top five doubles teams in Big 12. The two teams went toe-to-toe as the lead volleyed back and forth. Durham and van der Drift were able to come out ahead, escaping with the 7-5 tiebreaker win.
Singles play proved to be an uphill battle for the Lady Raiders as well as KU came out strong. Kansas' Lauren Hommell was the first to strike beating Potgieter 6-0, 6-3. Next, Tech's Jackson was able to notch in a singles win defeating Stephanie Smith, 6-4, 6-3. The Jayhawks quickly answered with a win in the No. 5 spot, tying the score at 2-2.
After winning the first set 6-2, van der Drift stumbled in the second losing 6-2. Going ahead 4-0 in the third, KU's Avdeeva made a comeback putting the match at 5-4. Van der Drift served for the match point and was able to pull away with the 6-4 win.
In the No. 3 spot, Durham sparred with Kansas' Horvath winning the first set 6-3, but dropping the second 6-4. With Tech only needing one point to secure the team victory, Durham was able to put the match away with the 7-5 win in the third.
The last match of the day also went into a third set as senior Lakann Wagley lost 6-4 in the first to KU's Kunigunda Dorn, but rallied for a 6-3 win in the second. With the lead going back and forth, Wagley was able to break Dorn, and eventually walk away with the 6-4 finisher.
