Kipyego Given USTFCCCA Regional Honor

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech's sophomore sensation Sally Kipyego was honored by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as the Mountain Region Women's Track Athlete of the Year. The honor is for Kipyego's debut indoor season with the Red Raider squad as she qualified for the NCAA Championships in two events, the 3000M and 5000M.
The Kenya native was honored after earning three Big 12 titles at the conference championships that occurred February 23-24. Kipyego took the gold-medal position in the women's mile, 5000M and distance medley relay. The titles earned her the High-Point Award, and she was later voted the Big 12 Female Athlete of the Year by the Big 12 head track and field coaches.
During the indoor season, Kipyego made her presence known and placed her name into the Texas Tech school record books a total of four times, including the DMR. Individually she broke the records for the women's mile, 3000M and 5000M.
Kipyego will compete in the 5000M at the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championships on Fri., March 9, at 7:50 p.m. On Saturday, the sophomore will run in the 3000M, which is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. For complete coverage, please visit www.texastech.com.
