LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech assistant Rock Light has been promoted to associate head track and field coach, as announced by head coach Wes Kittley on Saturday. The promotion follows Light's second season as the Red Raiders' long jump, triple jump and pole vault coach. With his guidance, Tech had eight national qualifications during the 2007 indoor and outdoor seasons.
"Coach Light has been a tremendous asset to our program since his arrival," Kittley said. "We are thrilled to be able to give him this promotion that he is so deserving of."
Light came to Tech in 2005 after serving as an assistant at the University of Oregon for two seasons. Also during his coaching career, the native of Lamar, Colo., has spent time with programs such as Louisiana State, Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos and Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo.
"I am honored that Texas Tech University, (head coach) Wes Kittley, (associate athletic director) Steve Downing and (athletic director) Gerald Myers have made this commitment to me," Light said. "This is important to me, and it shows the dedication that I have to this program and that Tech has towards my family and I."
Following offers from other universities, Light will remain in Lubbock as the associate head coach after two record-setting seasons with the Red Raiders. Light's student-athletes have set three new school records, the indoor women's pole vault and long jump, as well as outdoor women's long jump. He helped lead a majority of his jumpers to new personal bests in just two short seasons.
"The student-athletes at Texas Tech were a factor in my decision in remaining with the Red Raiders," Light said. "I am looking forward to continuing to coach them and the incoming recruits. I am excited to be a part of this program that is on the rise."
