Tech Host Second Invitational

Lubbock, TX- For the second week in a row the Red Raiders will be hosting an Invitational meet. Tech hopes last week's strong start carries over after winning 12 events in the first meet of the season. The meet is to start Saturday, January 28, at 10 a.m. with the field events. Running events will start at 11:30 a.m in the Athletic Training Center.
Texas Tech started the season with two NCAA provisional marks as Sally Kipyego ran a winning time of 4:46.40 in the mile and Shawon Harris also ran a winning time of 7.35 in the 55M hurdles. Junior transfer Tyler Menges began his Tech career by winning the shot put with a throw of 55'08.25". Freshman Shannon Jackson showed good potential as she won the 800M running a time of 2:16.81.
The Red Raiders should have its full squad competing this weekend, as All-Big 12 jumpers Bobby Evers and Lyle Leong will be competing in their first meet of the season.
Some of the schools competing this weekend will be UTEP, TCU, Wayland Baptist, South Plains College and ACU among others. For live results go to www.texastech.com.
Provisional Marks Reached Shawon Harris and Sally Kipyego both started the year running NCAA provisional times. Harris ran a 7.35 in the 55M hurdles and Kipyego ran a 4:46.40 in the mile.
Strong Start Tech showed promise during the first meet of the year. The Red Raiders overall had 27 athletes finish in the top three of their respective events. Twelve of those were first place victories highlighted by Kipyego in the mile and DMR and Harris winning the 55M hurdles and 4X400M relay.
Shot Put The Red Raiders took the top two spots in both men's and women's shot put at the Tech Invitational. Tyler Menges in his first meet for Tech threw a personal best 55'-08.25" to win. Harrison Benjamin placed second with a throw of 53'-01.75". The women were led by Patience Knight's winning throw of 49'-08.50". D'Andra Carter was right behind her with a second place mark of 47'-07".
Fabulous Freshman The highly touted recruiting class brought in by ninth-year head coach Wes Kittley didn't waste any time finding success. The women had Shannon Jackson won the 800M with a time of 2:16.81 in her second career race. On Friday Jackson and Christina Graham helped the DMR run a winning time of 11:40.92. Michelle Guzman finished her first weekend with a second in the 3000M with a time of 10:27.36. On the men's side Lamont Adams and Gil Roberts helped the 4X400M relay team win a tight race with a time of 3:16.25.
